Facebook Ban:Absolute Freedom,where is it?
Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 5:01 pm
In my previous post I mentioned the ignorance of my Muslim fellows who were using abusive tone to register their protest against Facebook.
In this post I will discuss about another group which is not only using Islam and Muhammad(saw) for their own sake but also giving such lame reasons that I am amazed that how such people even dare to call themselves educated and intellectuals.
A group of people in Pakistan is opposing the ban. One stance emerges that only a certain URL should be banned while other say that LHC or Pakistan government has no right to ban it. Some consider it an attack on freedom of speech and we should have ignored it. Another lame idea came out that since media gave it coverage hence more people joined that blasphemous group. I have no feelings for your mom or sis because I am not associated with them, does this give me right to offend them?
Freedom of Speech should be given to every one. Right and no one should ignore it but one must need to know the difference between freedom of speech and freedom to insult. I have no right to insult your wife or mother by using the tool of freedom hence I am even violating human rights here.
The question is, is there any thing like Absolute Freedom in this world? Let’s be clear, there is no such thing like absolute freedom in this world. Even if you are asked to live in a remote island when no one else is lived and no law seems to bind you, you re still not free since your living style will be Dependant on your surrounding, weather and stuff you would need to survive. At that time you will even have to think and drink things which you usually abhor. According to Islamic point of view we are entirely dependant on Allah(SWT). Every living has to taste death. That’s what Quran tells us plus if there was the concept of absolute freedom then there would not be a concept of living in societies and colonies. Man is a social Animal, the saying of Aristotle teaches us that a person needs to take care and consider the feelings of others as well otherwise society will fall apart and there would be a big chaos.
If you notice, most of the offensive use of freedom of speech is exercised by those who follow no religion. Since they follow no religion hence they believe in faith that they are free to potty-mouth any religion. While I could consider anti-faith cabal respectable if they would have argued by putting forward solid points. Just because I don’t follow a religion it does not give me rights to ridicule it.
Facebook ban in Pakistan has been taken larger than life. Liberal Pakistanis have been considering this step a ban on their freedom of expression. They have been cursing PTA or what not.
Allow me to say that this is not first time PTA has blocked a controversial site. In past several sites have been blocked. Similarly Pakistan is not the only country where something is banned. China,Canada and various other countries where different kind of censorship has been imposed. In past few days I have been reading following argument to lift the ban on Facebook etc:
1 - It will hurt business and companies who use Facebook to arrange events:
The most funniest comment I ever read. Using facebook for business meetings? Can anyone tell me such stupid company which use Facebook for serious work like business? What happened to LinkedIn.com which is a site of professionals? Yeah if some college kids use it to arrange an event to watch latest movie then it’s something else but let’s not fool yourself by giving such stupid arguments.
Second it was said that it hurt many Pakistani freelancers who were in business of facebook apps. Well go thru comments on sites like Techcrunch. several developers endorsed the ban. Plus Google was banned in China, did China stop progressing. Youtube is banned in Mideast, are they not progressing
2- Ok we do approve the removal of page, why to ban entire thing? Internet is Free!
Well one must realize that this very ban is highly being supported by majority of Pakistanis. I personally know people who have removed their accounts. Yes removed! and they are continue to advocate others as well. Beside that, our intellectuals usually whine about Free Judiciary and treat CJ Iftikhar like a god so why same CJ and his Judiciary is not being accepted? does this mean our affiliation with judiciary is conditional and bias?
And those who are talking about free thing, do they believe PTA has just blocked Facebook and they did not ban anything in past? If it’s all about freedom then PTA has also blocked anti shia site like Haq Char Yaar, If it’s all about freedom then why am I not allowed to read about the history of shias here and read what actually they talk about? Why am I being stopped to visit the site. Similarly many anti-Qadyani and anti Shia content was blocked for Pakistan. Why did not any Shia or Qadyani protested to lift the ban for sake of freedom? Why does not use Muhammad(saw)’s teaching for such websites as well.?
Similarly pro Taliban groups and Alqaeda supporters want freedom for their sites as well then why US,Pakistan and other countries banned their site to spread hatred ? How come the Facebook is NOT spreading hatred while Alqeda guys are? Is it not irony that same facebook bans even breast feeding pics but not the pics which are offending a religion?
I think one must need to understand the hypocrisy and different definitions of a same thing. We usually give lecture about those things which are not dear for me and as soon as it’s related to me, i would forget all laws and philosophy. If majority of Pakistanis are happy with the ban then our democratic attitude should help us to accept the ban. Those people of other sects and faith who have condemning PTA to ban facebook should be thankful of same PTA which blocked several sites which could promote secterian differences.
I will end up this post with a mail sent by my former immediate boss. Do read it and tell me what would you do. Your action would just reflect your personality and upbringing.
Suppose, One day, one of your good friend announced that he is arranging a party for three days, in which he’ll make jokes and display cartoons of your father. What will be your response? Will you join the party? Will you Break Friendship just for three days of party OR Break Friendship forever.?
Off course if you love your father you will definitely not continue friendship with him and we love Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) more than our parents. There is a saying of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) that “No one of you can become a perfect Muslim “Momin”, until he loves me more than his parents”.
Is it justifiable to block f@ce book and other sites involved in such blasphemous content publishing, just for ten days OR just to deactivate account for one day? How important these sites are in our life? And what we will miss if we DEACTIVATE the account? But if we did not DEACTIVATE the account one thing we surely miss is “SELF RESPECT“

You have put forth good argument. The people who know nothing have talked of business through facebook. Even a small business in Pakistan has its own website where they discuss in privacy.

If Muslims think there is a Pro-Jew bias on facebook then try starting pages like these:
Kill a Muslim Day
Draw Murdering Muslims Day
Milosevic was right Day
Celebrate genocide against Muslims Day
Celebrate Sabra and Shatila massacre
Make fun of Gujarat massacre Day
Make fun on lynching black people Day
African Slavery is Funny Day- draw cartoons making fun of!
Muslims keep complaining that Hitler is banned on fb, so is Milosevic because he was accused of genocide BY Muslims

I am done with depicting myself as “Liberal Muslim” to the world without regard for my religious fundamentals.
I am angry because facebook did not respond to the disgrace caused to my beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H)

As far as the developers are concerned, you can always access Facebook using proxy software like “Your Freedom” and through many other ways, so if facebook was banned, there was no threat as far as Facebook app development was concerned. There were a number of facebook app releases at my place of work, which worked out fine thanks to “Your Freedom”
