SOMETHING ABOUT ALCOHOL

Most of the people in Pakistan do not take alcohol, but SOME DO.

Most of you will be ignorant of the ill effects of alcohol. These ill effects are not only limited to its cause as a Social evil, but also it adversely affects the health of the alcoholic.
Alcohol causes damage to the liver. This damage to the liver occurs in three forms.Alcohol causes FATTY LIVER,ALCOHOLIC HEPATITIS and later on CIRRHOSIS of the liver.

Liver is a very important organ of your body which performs very vital functions. These functions include detoxification, storage, processing food and medicines and making bile and other important proteins essential for proper functioning of clotting system.Alcohol adversely affects the structure as well as function of the liver. In simple terms,it causes the liver to become fatty, then it starts damaging the liver tissue, that is termed as alcoholic hepatitis.Eventually the alcohol will cause cirrhosis.By cirrhosis we mean the liver gets fibrosed and functioning liver tissue gets replaced by a non functional one.

Cirrhosis of the liver also occurs due to viral hepatitis which is very common in this part of the world. And there are always chances of developing carcinoma(cancer)in a cirrhotic liver.

ALL these changes adversely affect the health of the alcoholic.Cirrhotic liver is the worst of all.It causes portal hypertension(hypertension of the portal venous system),splenomegaly(abnormaly big spleen) ascites(abnormal fluid gets collected inside the abdomen) and COMA.

Do you know why coma occurs?

When toxic substances from our digested food do directly to brain, without being destroyed in liver,it causes hepatic encephalopathy and eventually coma.

So i think now you will be realizing the importance of a healthy liver.

Apart from this alcohol is also held responsible for some carcinomas like that of colon and mouth. It also causes depression, anxiety, addiction, increased the acidity in stomach, pancreatitis, thining of bones, high blood pressure, heart diseases, diseases of the muscles and weight gain. Alcohol has been recognized as a very important factor in causing road accidents in westren countries. It also affects mental health of alcoholic including loss of memory and difficulty in learning.

Now what do you say?Is alcohol a good thing?

Certainly NO

  1. Thanks doc for considering my site for this worthy piece. JazakAllahu Khairan.

  2. Salamalikum

MashaAllah, well written and a good topic. We would have hoped that just its prohibition by Allah and His Messenger (saw) would have been enough for Muslims, but that is indeed not the case for some.

I would also like to add that those who drink and then state that drinking is not haram knowing that it has been prohibited by Allah have left the fold of Islam. Most people who drink know that they’re doing something wrong, so they are huge sinners. But, there are some who don’t care whether it’s haram or not and declare drinking to be permissible, such people are not Muslims because they have denied ayaat of Allah and the clear hukm of Allah and Rasoolullah (saw).

  3. Yar aap ne alcohol ki jo tasweer lagai hai us se to mera bhi ji chah raha hai ke ek sip loon…in Zaradari style!! :-D

  4. :)

well ye shayed itni expensive ho k tumhe is k liye sab kuch bechna par jaye! apne iman bhe :-)

  5. @MA Hussain,

Try to concentrate on the other pictures.
it is really just “something” about alcohol, greatly simplified, so that every one can understand.

  6. Thank you Dr. Hina
I am myself a doctor practising in UK and doing my post-graduation from Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health from London.
The rest of the article IS greatly simplfied for me, so I am not going for that. So let me concentrate on the first picture…something I may never get a taste of in my life time :-)

  7. I have a different view point on alcohol. I am not a doctor but I know doctors. Excess of everything is harmful. For instance if you consume excessive sugar you invite diseases. Same is with alcohol. Drink moderately and I can bet you will live more healthy life. Regarding social evil cause, yes, anything that makes you loose your senses is evil. Ban movies, good music, good food or everything that makes you say, I want more. You say I want more coz you loose your senses. Easy. :-)
For the sake of clarification, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke.
    But hey, ch33r5…

  8. thats some thing very much needed now a days. Also, Dr.Hina, can you please write some thing about ill effects of smoking?

  9. This was your comment on Asma’s blog

  10. Mahrukh ji, Allah aap ka bhala karay aur aap ko ek Adad Sugharh Sohar day jo ap ki har tarkeeb bila cho charan apna ooper test karay. :-)

Kumar, “Daru piney se Liver Kharab hojata hay” :P

  11. @MA Hussain,

    you made me laugh really!

  12. @kumar

what kind of healthy life?zara explain to karo :)

  13. Daddu, jyada daru peene se liver kharab hota hai na ki daru peene se

  14. @MA Hussain,

waise i had heard that UK is no more allowing graduates, but prefers post graduates now, from pakistan,or rest of the countries may be.PLAB etc are out of fashion these days.now most of the people, including my some class fellows and seniors are doing USMLE.one can have do this MRCP etc in Pakistan now easily,at Lahore i think.

[sorry for digression,i always catch seniors wherever i find them]

  15. @Dr. Hina
You are right. UK is no more welcoming doctors from non-European countries. Yet I landed in Belfast just a couple of months ago. And how come you are sure I am a grand senior? I graduated in 2003 :-)

  16. @ Dr. Hina: If you are lady then I wont argue with you, ladies are never wrong. :D
OK. No more kidding. Like your surveys that say Daru se liver kharab hota hai, I have enough of surveys that say moderate daru se heart problems nahi hoti and more over here is a quote from one of my best friend, though he must have quoted some one else.
“Those who drink, go to sleep. Those who sleep, don’t commit any sin. Those who don’t commit any sin go to heaven. So lets all drink and go to heaven.”
On a second note, yes excess of anything is harmful and daru is no exception.
    ch33r5 ;-)

  17. @MA Hussain

thank you,but you are my senior any way.i am graduate of november,2008 :)
actually i myself like and prefer UK to USA,but ofcourse i cant say anything which is more good. Are you from Karachi?

  18. @Kumar Chetan
Alcohol is harmful to the individual who takes it and the others who are around. That is why even in western societies there is a set blood level of alcohol having a level beyond that makes driving an offense. Alcohol is banned to be sold to minors. Majority of rape cases that are recorded in the UK are those young girls who are under the influence of alcohol. Domestic voilence and street crimes here in UK are mostly related to alcohol. Most of the traffic accidents are due to alcohol. And people spend a major part of their earnings over alcohol. and yes who is against banning voilent and vulgar movies? They are as harmful as alcohol of course.
    @Dr. Hina
I am from Karachi and I am a Dowite. What about you?

  19. Salamalaikum

It does not matter how much daru it takes to mess up one’s liver. Or, whether daru in moderation is good of heart or other organs.

Allah describes that those who believe say, سمعنا و أطعنا (sami’na wa at’ana…we hear and we obey). Alcholic drinks have been prohibited in Islam; so, case closed. Any other benefits of not drinking should be secondary for Muslims and not the reason for not drinking. It is enough for us as Muslims to know that Allah and His rasool prohibited it for us to consume.

  20. Hmm…
By God ki kasam lage, yahan to har koi daru ka dushman ban raha hai, dosto, its not alcohol that makes you do rape/drive rashly/kill/beat people, its your own brain that is stuffed with hatred/vengeance/lust. Clear your heart of all these and then you can see daru dil ke liye kitni achhi hai ;-)
Let us not look at western societies when we have so much of greed, corruption and all bad elements in our own society. I don’t need to pin point or even put an abstract image, we all know ke ham doodh ke dhule na wo hain na hum. Take all your surveys and stats and compare how many human beings died due to alcohol usage and how many due to other reasons.
I will repeat, excess of anything is harmful. The following is from a movie:
“Machis se chulhe me aag jalti hai ya kisi ka ghar, is me machis ka koi kasoor nahi, kasoor jis ke haath me machis hai us ka hai.”

I am not simply trying to give this conversation a dramatic touch but I am just trying to emphasize on one thing, self moderation. Drink responsibly and moderately.
For the sake of clarity, I don’t drink, I have no commercial or business or any other interest in alcohol. I am just trying to put my point.
    Ch33r5
    ;-)

  21. @Ibrahim

    NO DOUBT AT ALL

    @MA Hussain

    I am a KMCite

  22. @kumar: why does every one feels the need to rape/kill/ etc after drinking?
Are there some problems with every person? (after drinking alcohal)

  23. alcohol causes alcoholic cardiomyopathy,a heart disease

cardiologists have found that a drug Baclofen,a muscle relaxant actually, can be used to reduce craving for alcohol.
