I don’t think there is any comparison of Musharraf with any of the dictator or political dictator in the history of Pakistan, Musharraf has done a lot of things which should be condemned but on the other hand he was the first to set the trend to bear criticism on someone who is in power.
Alhamdulillah! La’natullahi alyhi..Allah’s curse be on him.
However, I won’t put Zia with Mush. Zia was the best thing that happened to Pakistan (though he had his mistakes) Dictatorship isn’t bad if carried out properly. In fact, ‘dictatorship’ is closer to the type of government Islamic history has seen since its inception than democracy. In khilafah, a group of qualified (majlis as-shoura) chooses a khalifa and that’s it. The awaaam doesn’t get the right to choose its leader nor does it get the right to dethrone the ruler. In fact, almost all the scholars, every single one that I can think of, consider democracy to be against shariah, against Islam.
We’ve seen from East to West what democracy has brought us. This is not to say that if you live in a country where you get to vote, you shouldn’t excercise your right to vote to elect the least evil of the people.
Ibrahim bhai I disagree. There is no difference. First and foremost, that was Zia who invented MQM to battle with PPP. AS far as Shariah is concerned, that was just dramay bazi to show rest of the world that “Islam is powerful in his command” since he needed aid to fight with Russia. If he was so sincere then he would have implemented it in his 11 years of tenure, he did not because he didn’t want it at all.
@Ahmar: don’t forget it was him who later banned the media. He allowed criticism as much as it was harmless for him. that’s it
I agree with Ibrahim. Don’t take my word for it. Go and ask Mufti Taqi Usmani, or Rafi Usmani or any other buzurg and ask them.
2nd thing about MQM. MQM was not invented by ZIA. APMSO existed before ZIA came into power. Why would ZIA create MQM? to wipe of Jamatee Votes? MQM grew big because of Qasba Kalooni, Aligarh and because of the incident where one girl (I can’ recall her name) was crushed to death by a speeding bus.
MQM came into existence because of the “ASBIAT” of other ethnic groups like Jeay Sindh, PPP and ANP and BNP, not because of Zia-ul-Haq.
Zia ul Haq was not an Ameer-ul-Momineen, but if you compare with the rest, he was much better.
You’re right. He had his mistakes, many mistakes. But, he did many things to implement shariah. Yes, he was not perfect and so didn’t fully implement it. But, he was the first one to give some measure of respect to scholar in the government. Remember, shariat bench and hudood ordinance were done under him. Also know that he had started implemented these things before Russian/Afghan war got significant. I won’t judge his intentions because many of his actions were good. Also, there is one HUGE difference between him and Mush. Zia can actually be called a shaheed (though only Allah knows) because the way he died (and we know every single sin/burden except paying off qarz (debt) is forgiven for a shaheed) while Mush is all alive and well.
I mean, even if Zia hadn’t implemented any part of shariah (many of which he did) he would have been better than Mush, but still extremely blameworthy. Mush actually went out of his way to change the laws of Allah. He is the same person who owns dogs, had catwalks and other fahash things during the Aug. 14th celebrations few years ago, conducted Lal masjid episode, killed many other innocent Muslims.
The secularists, the liberals, the modernists all love Mush and they all hate Zia. That’s enough to know that Zia was not the same as Mush. May Allah accept Zia as a shaheed and forgive his mistakes.
@Check this: APMSO was a uni party and prior to MQM Altaf was an MQM activist. Altaf was beaten up by some IJT guy and he got against Jamat Islami. You will notice tat Altaf despises Jamat and the reason is personal rather political or ideological.
Offcourse he was better than Mush that he might not have killed many but there was violence in his era too which we all know but yeah still better than Mush. Mush was exceptional I must say and could be severe in future too(Godforbid)
doesnt matter if it was all due war aginst russia but still there was some islam in Zia’s rule. Mush. tried every thing to eliminate islam and he has got eliminated himself.
“The secularists, the liberals, the modernists all love Mush and they all hate Zia. That’s enough to know that Zia was not the same as Mush”
This is not fair to close eyes from his sins just because he did something from Islam and what so actively he did? at the end of the every decision was taken by himself rather his SHOORA. Fine he did a good job by introducing Hudood Ordinance but on other hand he did severe blunders in political fields which can’t be ignored at all. He ordered Police to beat journalists just like Mush. He threw Junejo away just like Mush threw jamali and Nawaz.
I know left hate Zia due to his inclination towards Islam but its a sad truth that he failed to implement Islam despite of 11 years of rule. Why? why couldn’t he introduce a law of cutting hands in Pakistan? Look “thinking that I love Islam” and actually ACTING upon it is quite different. Zia spent whole era in Afghan war and its not a hidden truth his guys earned a lot during afghan war. And most important that APMSO transformed in MQM in his era, this is something I always despise. If you notice, Atlaf seldom says anything bad to ZIA just like Altaf can’t say anything bad to Musharraf. Why? because both dictators pampered him and his party for their own sake along with ISI.
In short, I have reasons to oppose Zia and would keep doing. Fine he would have done few good things for Islam but ironically the way Bhutto was progressing to unite Ummah in form of Islamic conference and in econimical fields, Zia didn’t do at all. Sad truth is that US had brought Zia to oppose ZA Bhutto due to his such efforts despite of his inclination towards liberalism.
I might not like Bhutto but would be thankful of him for 1)declaring Qadyanis as non-Muslims 2)Islamic Conference 3)Atomic Bomb 4)Uniting Ummah and maybe Allah forgives his other sins due to such efforts by him.
Adnan, you are quite right. The problem here is that you equated Zia with Mush. Most scholars call Mush a kafir and now you showed Zia and Mush in the same manner. This is unfounded assumption that Bhutto did all the four things you listed from his own will (except for the third one). Rather, he was forced into the first one, as the liberals will have you believe. And, second and fourth were the works of King Faisal and not Bhutto. Rabita-e-Islami (founded in KSA) was doing all this work.
Can provide any reference as to Zia being brought by US against Bhutto? I ask because US had loads of trouble with Zia…so, I can’t imagine this to be the case.
The misdeeds of Zia you have listed are on political fronts, but that shouldn’t deter us from acknowledging the good he had done. He was killed, for God’s sake. This is proof enough. After the four khulfa ar-Rashideen, except of Umar bin Abdul Aziz all the khulafa had faults when he came to politics (consolidating power, etc.), but they did much to expand the Islamic empire (and not always for money). No, they understood that obligation. Does it mean we should equate them with somebody like the mushrikeen of Makkah?
This is my only problem….equating Zia and Mush.
However, I want to say that you are very, very correct that Zia failed to implement the whole shariah. This is very true and those who support Zia should acknowledge this fact and not let themselves drown in the love of Zia. Adnan, you are right, Zia failed to implement even all of the hadd punishment (like cutting the hands, and shariah is more than just hadd punishment and he failed in them as well). He didn’t do much to curb banks doing haram business either. So, yes, he had many faults. But, he is no Mush; shouldn’t be spoken in the same context and breadth as Mush.
I had read somewhere online and in paper about that Zia was brought with Asirward of US(why? later Russia war proved it so).
US didn’t have any issue with Zia till the end of Russia-US war when Ziaul Haq started assuming that he could do whatever he wants. What happened next we all know that. I will search the online link and will share here.
one thing I do admit that hudood ordinance was one of the best thing by Zia.

August is the month of Independence.

@Bee: yea no more Pakistan, then it would be United Pakistan in which India would be a part of Pakistan.
@MB: another dictator what else?

and one more thing. Befor MQM, Karachites used to vote for Jamat-e-Islami and not PPP (as most of the PPPs like to think).
